How to play Tangram

Read the aim of Tangram, then make your first move. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Check the rule before repeating the action. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
